The Choro challenge
Beautifying the world one choro at a time
In the Summer of 2019 I got bitten by the choro bug. Choro is considered the grandfather of Bossa nova, and is an exuberant genre of early Brazilian music. As an aftermath of having attended two workshops on choro, I created a social learning group on Facebook, for enthusiasts of Brazilian choro (also called chorinho), who would like to improve their chops in playing this powerful genre of early Brazilian music.
The main focus is on a systematic expansion of repertoire, and of REALLY knowing the choros you already play: Knowing the melody and chord progression by heart, being able to create counterpoints, knowing the underlining comp patterns/rhythms, stylistic details of the piece, being able to vary the melody, and improvise over parts etc.
If you are anything like me, and have a hard time sticking to your practicing goals, this group might be helpful to hold one another accountable, encourage each other to stick to the plan, and enlighten one another with knowledge on individual topics regarding the pieces.
And how wonderful would it be to continually increase our mutual repertoire, to learn from one another, and to continue to spread the gospel of choro?!!!
